Halladay, Downs and Janssen join growing DL list

Despite defeating the Philadelphia Phillies to earn their first interleague series win today was not a happy day for the Jays. Toronto sent 3 different pitchers to the 15- day-DL today.

To start the day Toronto announced that starter Casey Janssen has been sent to the DL with an inflamed throwing shoulder. To replace Janssen in the rotation the Blue Jays recalled lefty Brad Mills from Las Vegas.

Later in the day 2 more pitchers were added to the DL as Toronto ace Roy Halladay and closer Scott Downs were placed on the 15-day-DL. Downs sprained his left big toe Tuesday night in Philadelphia running out a grounder and Halladay has been out since June 12th with a right groin strain. No word yet on who will replace Downs and Halladay on the roster.

Litsch to undergo Tommy John surgery

Right handed starter Jesse Litsch will become the latest young pitching arm to undergo the infamous Tommy John surgery. The 24 year old left a game on April 13 against the Minnesota Twins and was originally expected to rejoin the Jays a few weeks later but after multiple visit to Dr. James Andrews it was determined surgery is needed.

Jesse Litsch is expected to miss 10-12 months.

Accardo shutdown for the season

Reliever Jeremy Accardo has been shutdown for the rest of the 2008 season rather than risk any further comeback attempts this year. Accardo has been on the DL since May 10th with what the Jays have described as a right forearm strain and is scheduled to visit Dr. James Andrews within the near future.

Report: Rolen activated

According the Fan 590 third baseman Scott Rolen has been activated from the 15-day DL in time for tonight’s game. Rolen has been on the DL since August 10th with a sore left shoulder, his activation ends speculation of who would fill the roster spot vacated by the demoted Kevin Mench.

Wilkerson to the DL

Outfielder Brad Wilkerson has been moved to the 15-day DL due to back spasms retroactive to August 18th when Wilkerson hurt himself diving for a ball. The move clears room on the 25 man roster for the newly acquired Jose Bautista who will get his first start tomorrow vs John Lester and the Boston Red Sox.
