Update: Stairs to the Phillies

As reported last night Matt Stairs has been traded to a contender who turned out to be the Philadelphia Phillies. In return Toronto receives LHP Fabio Castro in return who in playing time at two different minor league levels has combined record of 8-4 and a 4.71 ERA.

Report: Stairs DFA’d and Travis Snider is on his way

The National Post is reporting that Matt Stairs has been designated for assignment following tonight’s game in order to clear the way for his trade to a contender. The trade is expected to happen within the next 48 hours.

With Stairs gone a whole will open up on the roster for the most hyped hitting prospect Toronto has had in years, Travis Snider. Snider a first round pick in 2006 started the season in Single A Dunedin and has risen all the way to AAA Syracuse.

Diaz sent to Pirates to complete deal

Catcher Robinson Diaz was sent to the Pittsburgh Pirates today to complete the deal for Jose Bautista. Diaz who many expected to contend for the back up catchers position next season should Gregg Zaun leave was assigned to Indianapolis in the Pirates organization.

In another roster move outfielder Kevin Mench was returned to AAA Syracuse less than a week after being re-called. No word has been given yet on who will take Mench’s place on the 25-man roster but are expected to prior to tomorrow’s game.

Blue Jays acquire Jose Bautista for a PTBNL

Toronto has acquired 3B/OF Jose Bautista from the Pittsburgh Pirates for a player to be named later. The 27 year old Bautista is expected to provide depth at 3rd behind Marco Scutaro while Scott Rolen is out with a wonky shoulder.

While not known for his great hitting Bautista does bring some pop to the bench having belted 15 homeruns in 2008 and 16 in the 2007 season.
